PAH biomarker responses in polar cod (Boreogadus saida) exposed to benzo(a)pyrene
Aquatic Toxicology, 2009With expanding oil and gas activities into the Arctic region, there is a need to evaluate the induction capacity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) biomarkers on Arctic marine organisms and to test analytical methods that have been optimized for their temperate counterparts.

This work investigates the occurrence of OCPs, such as hexachlorocyclohexane (α-, β-, γ- and δ-HCH) isomers, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p'-DDT) and its metabolite dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE), endosulfan (α- and β-EDS) isomers, chlorpyrifos (CPF), dacthal (DAC) and phenolic compounds, such as 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) and its ...

Population Genetic Diversity of Arctic Cod (Boreogadus saida) of Russian Arctic Seas
Journal of Ichthyology, 2019We present the data on genetic variation of Arctic cod Boreogadus saida assessed using seven microsatellite loci in four samples collected in the Kara, Laptev, and East-Siberian seas in 2014 and 2017. We found small but mostly statistically significant differences between the samples.

Variation in the diet of Arctic Cod (Boreogadus saida) in the Pacific Arctic and Bering Sea
Environmental Biology of Fishes, 2016Arctic cod, Boreogadus saida (Lepechin, 1774), is a nodal species in Arctic marine foodwebs as an important prey of many birds, marine mammals, and other fishes, as well as an abundant predator of zooplankton and epibenthic fauna. We examined the summer diet of Arctic cod across a latitudinal gradient extending from the southern limit of their ...

Allozymic and scnDNA homogeneity in polar cod (Boreogadus saida) (Gadiformes: Gadidae)
1997Polar cod in the Arctic Ocean exhibits variation over its distributional area in both morphometry, coloration and behaviour. The genetic basis to this variation is not known. Thus, a population genetic survey of polar cod was initiated. Specimens were sampled from the Pechora Sea, off Svalbard and in the Denmark Strait and examined for variation at ...

Dynamics of Production Characteristics of Polar Cod Boreogadus saida (Gadidae) in the Barents Sea
Journal of Ichthyology, 2018The somatic and generative production and the P/B-coefficient of polar cod Boreogadus saida of the Barents Sea were calculated using a long-term dataset (1969–2013). It has been found that the main contribution to the production in 1969–1978 was made by the individuals aged 1+–4+, while that in a later period was by the fish aged 1+–2+; the share of ...

Morphological Adaptations of Polar Cod Boreogadus saida (Gadidae) to a Life in the Ice Conditions
Journal of Ichthyology, 2020Illustrated description of the scales of the cryopelagic polar cod (Boreogadus saida) is given for the first time. Scale cover in this species is formed by the ordinary cycloid scales as well as a rather numerous additional spiny bony plates, which superficially resemble placoid scales.

We report sets of 19 and 16 microsatellite loci for the examination of the population genetics of Boreogadus saida and Arctogadus glacialis, respectively. Six of these loci were developed from a collection of 9,497 expressed sequences from B. saida while the remaining loci were found in the literature and optimized for use in B. saida and A. glacialis.

Schooling behaviour of arctic cod, Boreogadus saida, in relation to drifting pack ice
Environmental Biology of Fishes, 1993Concentrations of arctic cod were detected with a hydroacoustic system in Resolute Bay, NWT during 2 weeks in August of 1986. Fish biomass within the bay was about 30 t. The fish were feeding primarily on amphipods, which were abundant. When the daily location of the schools was examined in relation to the extent and position of drifting pack ice, a ...
