The outer detector of Borexino

It is a large water Cherenkov detector for identifying cosmic muons, penetrating the whole detector system. The Outer Detector is important for tagging cosmic muon generated background events in Borexino.

BOREXINO: the technical description

The Borexino purification system
International Journal of Modern Physics A, 2014Purification of 278 tons of liquid scintillator and 889 tons of buffer shielding for the Borexino solar neutrino detector is performed with a system of combined distillation, water extraction, gas stripping and filtration. The purification system removed K , U and Th by distillation of the pseudocumene solvent and the PPO fluor.
