Effects of exercise in a fed or fasted state on mitochondrial dynamics regulators in the skeletal muscle of recreationally active males

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 10, Page 4525-4540, 1 October 2026.
Abstract Exercise and nutritional modulation favourably alter mitochondrial quantity and quality in skeletal muscle. Mitochondrial dynamics, the coordination of fission and fusion events, are poised to mediate key aspects of organelle adaptation that arise from exercise.

Six weeks of high‐intensity interval training improve autonomic and metabolic responses in active postmenopausal women

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 10, Page 4397-4408, 1 October 2026.
Abstract This study analysed the effects of a supervised high‐intensity interval training (HIIT) programme on metabolic flexibility and autonomic function in active postmenopausal women. Twenty women (66.6 ± 6.2 years; 67.9 ± 11.1 kg) completed a 6‐week cycling HIIT intervention consisting of three weekly sessions (20 min/session).

Effects of dietary nitrate supplementation on peak oxygen uptake following 10 days of Ramadan fasting in healthy adults

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 10, Page 4636-4645, 1 October 2026.
Abstract Ramadan is a sacred religious practice observed by Muslims that involves abstaining from food and water from sunrise to sunset for 1 month. Prior work has reported that peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2peak${{\dot{V}}_{{{{\mathrm{O}}}_2}{\mathrm{peak}}}}$) can decline during Ramadan in parallel with reduced physical activity.

The impact of biological sex and stroke volume constituents on heterogeneity in the Q̇$\dot{Q}$–V̇O2${{\dot{V}}_{{{{\mathrm{O}}}_2}}}$ relationship and skeletal muscle saturation during cycling

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 10, Page 4382-4396, 1 October 2026.
Abstract Interindividual variability in the cardiac output (Q̇$\dot{Q}$) to the rate of oxygen consumption (V̇O2${{\dot{V}}_{{{{\mathrm{O}}}_2}}}$) slope (Q̇$\dot{Q}$–V̇O2${{\dot{V}}_{{{{\mathrm{O}}}_2}}}$) in healthy males is related to stroke volume (SV); however, the impact of differences in left ventricular (LV) structure and function as well as ...

Physiological and autonomic responses to intermittent low‐lung‐volume apnoea and pain sensitivity: A randomized controlled pilot trial

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 10, Page 4928-4941, 1 October 2026.
Abstract Intermittent apnoeas may induce hypoalgesia; however, the effects of low‐lung‐volume static apnoea have not been investigated. Eighty healthy participants were randomized to an apnoea group (AG) or a control group (CG). The AG performed a 6‐min protocol of intermittent static apnoea at low lung volume (passive exhalation), whereas the CG ...
