FOD impact testing of composite fan blades [PDF]

open access: yes
The results of impact tests on large, fiber composite fan blades for aircraft turbofan engine applications are discussed. Solid composite blades of two different sizes and designs were tested. Both graphite/epoxy and boron/epoxy were evaluated.

High-temperature Adhesive Development and Evaluation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1985
High-temperature adhesive systems are evaluated for short and long-term stability at temperatures ranging from 232C to 427C. The resins selected for characterization include: NASA Langley developed polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ), and commercially available ...

Degradation Mechanism of Phosphate‐Based Li‐NASICON Conductors in Alkaline Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, Volume 15, Issue 11, March 18, 2025.
The presence of water in the cathode of a Li‐air battery shifts reactions to produce LiOH, creating a corrosive, alkaline environment. This study investigates the alkaline stability of the common Li‐NASICON solid‐state conductor chemistries through a systematic experimental study combined with computational modeling to understand the degradation ...

Design and realization of a sputter deposition system for the \textit{in situ-} and \textit{in operando-}use in polarized neutron reflectometry experiments

open access: yes, 2017
We report on the realization of a sputter deposition system for the in situ- and in operando-use in polarized neutron reflectometry experiments. Starting with the scientific requirements, which define the general design considerations, the external ...

The 8Li Calibration Source for the Sudbury Neutrino Obervatory

open access: yes, 2002
A calibration source employing 8Li (t_1/2 = 0.838s) has been developed for use with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). This source creates a spectrum of beta particles with an energy range similar to that of the SNO 8B solar neutrino signal.

Disorder‐Driven Fast Na+ Transport: From Crystalline to Amorphous Networks in the Mixed‐Anion NaTaOxCl6−2x Oxychlorides

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
Oxygen substitution in NaTaOxCl6‐2x drives structural evolution from isolated [TaCl6]– octahedra, through oxygen‐bridged [Ta2OCl10]2– dimers, toward extended trans‐[TaO2Cl4]3– chain‐like arrangements. At intermediate compositions, zero‐dimensional corner‐sharing motifs are proposed to create a flexible, disordered framework that peaks ionic ...

Thermal design improvements for 30kWe arcjet engine [PDF]

open access: yes
Two thermal design improvements for 30 kWe arcjet engines are described. A ZrB2 high temperature coating was used to increase the surface emissivity of the nozzle radiating surface, enabling lower temperature operation, which should lead to longer nozzle
