Borrelia in Pigeons: no Serological Evidence of Borrelia burgdorferi Infection
Journal of Veterinary Medicine, Series B, 1995SummaryIn order to clarify the supposed involvement of urban pigeons (Columba livia livia) in the epidemiology of Lyme disease, the presence of antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia anserina in pigeons' sera, collected in 12 areas of northern and central Italy, was evaluated.

Shared flagellar epitopes of Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia anserina
Veterinary Microbiology, 1989Antigenic cross-reactivity between Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia anserina was studied using mouse immune sera and monoclonal antibodies. With immune sera, significant cross-reactivity between B. burgdorferi and B. anserina was demonstrated by indirect immunofluorescent assay.

Antigenic variation in Borrelia
Research in Microbiology, 1991Antigenic variation was demonstrated for the agent of relapsing fever, Borrelia hermsii. The phenomenon is correlated with changes in major surface proteins called Vmp. The genes encoding these antigens are located on linear plasmids. Expression occurs by transposition of genes encoding Vmp to a telomeric expression site located on another linear ...

Borrelia Infection in Children
Acta Paediatrica, 1989ABSTRACT. All children (15 years) admitted during 1986 to Sachs Children's Hospital and presenting signs of facial palsy and/or meningitis, or with a history of known tick bite followed by headache, fatigue and muscle pain, were investigated for antibodies to Borrelia in serum and cerebrospinal fluid.

Borrelia infection and vertigo
Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 198873 patients with vertigo were studied regarding serum antibodies to Borrelia spirochete antigen, using an indirect immunofluorescence method. Ten patients (14%) had serological evidence of Borrelia infection. All 10 patients had severe, incapacitating vertigo. Four of the Borrelia patients had positional vertigo and all 10 had positional nystagmus when

ELECTRON MICROSCOPY OF BORRELIA MERIONESI AND BORRELIA RECURRENTIS
Acta Pathologica Microbiologica Scandinavica Section B Microbiology and Immunology, 1974Borrelia merionesi and Borrelia recurrentis were studied in the electron microscope by means of negative staining and sectioning techniques. The cells of the two species had similar morphology. The cells were regularly waved and had pointed ends. Each organism had two bundles of flagella, one bundle originating from each end of the cell and each ...

Incorporation of cysteine by Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia hermsii
Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1992The growth rate of Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia hermsii in BSK II medium prepared with cysteine-free or cysteine-containing (0.185–5.92 mM) CMRL 1066 medium was studied. In media with cysteine-free CMRL 1066, growth of borreliae was detectable, although it was reduced by approximately 80%.

Using FAME profiles we have demonstrated the inter-species differentiation of certain members of the spirochaete family- Leptospira, Serpulina and Borrelia species. Now we propose that intra-species differentiation of Borrelia species is possible using this phenotypic method. The delineation of B. burgdorferi into B.

DNA homology studies were performed on Borrelia hermsii, B. duttoni, B. crocidurae and the O. coriaceus spirochete. These organisms had a genus level relationship with each other. B. hermsii was 17 to 53% homologous with B. duttoni, B. crocidurae, and the O. coriaceus spirochetes; B. crocidurae was 17-32% related to B. hermsii, B.

The genus Borrelia is one of the four genera of the family Spirochaetaceae and is comprised of pathogenic spirochetes that are transmitted by arthropod vectors. With the exception of louse-borne relapsing fever, the borrelioses are zoonoses. In the past, due to the inability to culture the spirochetes and conduct the usual morphological and ...
