Human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) is an emerging infectious disease recognized in the Western hemisphere. HGE is well known to occur in North America, but records from outside the United States are sparse. The great majority of data from Europe are restricted to seroprevalence studies and molecular biological detection of granulocytic ehrlichiae ...

[Borrelia burgdorferi Group: in-vitro antibiotic sensitivity].
Orvosi hetilap, 2002Failures in the antibiotic therapy of Lyme disease have repeatedly been demonstrated by post-treatment isolations of the infecting borreliae. Analyses of the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of borreliae may help to understand the causes of such treatment failures and to develop new therapeutic regimens. The three subspecies of Borrelia burgdorferi ...

Examination of a number of previously published aligned Borrelia 16S rRNA sequences revealed the presence of regions which could serve as oligonucleotide probe targets for both species-specific identification of Borrelia burgdorferi and distinction between genomic groups. Total cellular RNA isolated from Borrelia cultures was used in slot blot analysis.

Prevalence data for tick-borne pathogens are used to assess the risk for human health. In this study the presence and identity of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, and Rickettsia species in Bulgarian Ixodes ricinus ticks and in non- Ixodes ticks from Turkey and Albania was determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse ...

Dogs can carry and share zoonotic pathogens with humans. This problem is understudied in different parts of the world, including Jordan. This study determined the prevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Ehrlichia canis, Dirofilaria immitis, and Borrelia burgdorferi using the SNAP 4Dx Plus test and spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) using enzyme ...

We investigated the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in a Lyme borreliosis (LB) endemic region of northern Croatia. Ticks (n = 124) were collected at five locations and analysed by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A DNA fragment from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) of I.

A total of 67 spirochetal isolates grown from the hard tick, Ixodes ricinus were analysed by PCR amplification of the spacer region between two conserved structures, the 3' end of the 5S rRNA and the 5' end of the 23S rRNA genes of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. A 246-255 bp amplicon was generated from 13 reference strains of B.

A life longevity of Ixodes ricinus and I. persulcatus have been examined in laboratory conditions. It was found that specimens infected with borreliae live slightly longer than non-infected ones (difference is not reliable); females live 1.5 times longer than males; I. ricinus lives 2-4 times longer than I. persulcatus.

The authors evaluate the presence of anti-Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in a group of polysclerotic patients of Eastern Sicily, in order to verify or dismiss a correlation between Borrelia infection and demyelinizing syndrome. 460 samples of serum were examined, of which 60 belonged to patients affected by definite multiple sclerosis; the other 400 ...

The risk of acquiring Lyme disease is high in areas in which the disease is endemic, and the development of a safe and effective vaccine is therefore important. We conducted a multicenter, double-blind, randomized trial involving 10,936 subjects who lived in areas of the United States in which Lyme disease is endemic.
