Cultivation at 37°C enhances Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto infectivity for hamsters
Medical Microbiology and Immunology, 2002Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.), the causative agent of Lyme disease in North America is transmitted to the mammalian host by ticks belonging to the genus, Ixodes. Antibodies to several spirochetal proteins, most notably outer surface protein C (OspC), have been observed in early infection in both humans and laboratory animals.

Over a 3-y period, Ixodes ricinus ticks were randomly collected to study the prevalence of 4 Borrelia species: B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. afzelii, B. garinii and B. valaisiana. While B. burgdorferi s. s., B. afzelii, and B. garinii have been associated with human borreliosis in Norway for several years, B.

ABSTRACT In recent years, the utility of serum-based diagnostic testing for Lyme disease has improved substantially; however, recovery by culture of the bacterium from skin biopsies of suspected patients is still the only definitive laboratory test.

A total of 2816 unfed adults nymphs of Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected from vegetation in Kosice (Eastern Slovakia) from 1994 to 1997. Prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi s. l. in I. ricinus ticks, detected by dark field microscopy, varied and depended upon the year and the habitat of the collected ticks.

Lectin-binding characteristics of a lyme borreliosis spirocheteBorrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto
Folia Microbiologica, 2005Borrelial glycoconjugates were localized by labeled lectins on ultrathin cryosections and on surfaces of intact negatively stained bacteria. Protein-saccharide complexes in these glycoconjugates were partially characterized by means of enzyme deglycosylation and mild alkali pretreatment of cryosections.

In spring 1993, Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected from six regions of Slovenia to determine their overall rate of infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and to assess the frequency of individual species in these tick populations. Ticks were dissected and midgut tissue inoculated into modified Barbour-Stoenner-Kelly (BSK II) medium.

Determination of the causative agent of erythema-like skin lesions in case of nonspecific superficial perivascular dermatitis was supported by histological examination and led to the latter diagnosis of Hyperkeratosis lenticularis perstans (Flegel disease) in patient.

Lyme borreliosis, manifesting as arthritis, was first reported in the USA in 1977 [1] and the expanded clinical spectrum of this tick-borne multisystem Borrelia infection has since been recognized in many countries. The initial symptom and hallmark of lyme borreliosis is an expanding skin rash called erythema migrans emerging around the tick-bite site.
