Climate‐associated variation in the within‐season dynamics of juvenile ticks in California

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 15, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract Changing climate has driven shifts in species phenology, influencing a range of ecological interactions from plant–pollinator to consumer–resource. Phenological changes in host–parasite systems have implications for pathogen transmission dynamics.

Long-term in vitro cultivation of Borrelia miyamotoi

open access: yesTicks and Tick-borne Diseases, 2015
Borrelia are fastidious bacteria some of which are difficult to grow in vitro. Here, we report a method for successful continuous in vitro cultivation of the emerging pathogen Borrelia miyamotoi. The type and quantity of serum as well as the atmosphere were critical for successful in vitro cultivation. Optimal growth was achieved using 50% pooled human

Global risk dynamics of Borrelia miyamotoi in the context of climate change

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 10, October 2024.
The habitat suitability index for primary vector ticks of Borrelia miyamotoi was projected using boosted regression tree models, considering multiple shared socio‐economic pathway scenarios over various time periods. A random forest model was used to predict the current and future potential risk areas of B. miyamotoi on a global scale.

Genome resequencing reveals population divergence and local adaptation of blacklegged ticks in the United States

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 33, Issue 15, August 2024.
Abstract Tick vectors and tick‐borne disease are increasingly impacting human populations globally. An important challenge is to understand tick movement patterns, as this information can be used to improve management and predictive modelling of tick population dynamics.

Dynamic nesting of Anaplasma marginale in the microbial communities of Rhipicephalus microplus

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 4, April 2024.
This study investigates the dynamic interactions within the microbiome of the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus, emphasizing its relationship with the tick‐borne pathogen Anaplasma marginale. By analyzing ticks feeding on chronically infected cattle over a two‐year period using next‐generation sequencing, the research reveals significant fluctuations

Genetic structure of Borrelia sp. populations in Russia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013

Structural characterisation of outer membrane proteins from Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato by small-angle X-ray scattering [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Forming the interface between the bacterial cell and the host, the outer membrane of Borrelia is known to play a key role in pathogenicity. Although Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato are considered to be Gram-negative, their outer membrane is unique ...

Historical associations and spatiotemporal changes of pathogen presence in ticks in Canada: A systematic review

open access: yesZoonoses and Public Health, Volume 71, Issue 1, Page 18-33, February 2024.
Abstract Background Starting in the early 20th century, ticks and their pathogens have been detected during surveillance efforts in Canada. Since then, the geographic spread of tick vectors and tick‐borne pathogens has steadily increased in Canada with the establishment of tick and host populations.

Zoonotic disease classification in wildlife: a theoretical framework for researchers

open access: yesMammal Review, Volume 54, Issue 1, Page 63-77, January 2024.
Classification systems are useful tools for aggregating diseases to study them in more detail. However, the current systems are mainly designed for use in health care and fail to capture many details of zoonotic diseases. The goal of this study was to develop a framework for the classification of zoonotic diseases which can generate data useful to ...
