Avifauna in different habitats in the Fuquene River drainage (Cundinamarca), Colombia

open access: yesBiota Colombiana, 2014
Baseline information is a priority for conservation plans of protected areas, especially when they are of great importance for the maintenance of biodiversity.

Wood density variation across an Andes‐to‐Amazon elevational gradient

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 9, Page 2370-2385, September 2025.
We study how wood density varies along a 3500‐m elevational gradient, spanning from the Andean tree line to the Amazon basin. Our results reveal that wood density decreases from low to mid‐elevations, then increases toward the tree line. These patterns underscore the influence of species composition, life forms such as tree ferns, and local ...

The palynological flora of the middle San Eugenio river drainage, Risaralda (Central Cordillera), Colombia

open access: yesActualidades Biológicas, 2015
A palynological atlas of the middle San Eugenio river drainage (Risaralda), Colombia is presented in order to established points of reference for future palynological studies of the Colombian Andes during the quaternary period.

High extinction risk of the endemic tree flora in a hyper‐diverse region of the Amazon

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 7, Issue 4, Page 998-1010, July 2025.
The rapid global loss of biodiversity, especially in the Neotropics, underscores the need to understand how deforestation impacts endemic plant species' extinction risk and conservation status. Due to limited ranges and habitat specialization, endemics are particularly Vulnerable.

Climatic and Edaphic Drivers of Soil Organic Carbon and Pyrogenic Carbon Stocks Across Elevation and Disturbance Gradients in Colombian Andean Forests

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 31, Issue 7, July 2025.
This study examined soil organic carbon (SOC) and pyrogenic carbon (PyC) stocks in tropical Andean soils across elevation and disturbance gradients in Colombia. SOC stocks to 100 cm depth averaged 433.10 Mg C ha−1 while PyC was 34.13 Mg C ha−1. Key drivers of PyC stocks include soil clay (%), mean annual precipitation (PA), pH, Ca, and NDVI, which ...

Thermal tolerance is linked to anatomical but not morphological leaf traits in woody species of Andean tropical montane forests

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 6, Page 1537-1549, June 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The world is experiencing a rise in global temperatures as a result of climate change. Higher temperatures along with more frequent heat waves negatively impact physiological levels and ultimately lead to plant death.

Restricted Dispersal in the Late Successional Forest Tree Species Nothofagus Pumilio: Consequences Under Global Change

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 5, May 2025.
We aim to uncover the current and historic effective dispersal distances and characterize fine‐scale genetic structure in the forest tree species Nothofagus pumilio. Short seed dispersal distances mean N. pumilio distribution expansion capacity may be limited, especially in the context of global change.
