Assessing disturbances in surviving primary forests of Europe

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 2, April 2025.
Abstract Primary forests are of paramount importance for biodiversity conservation and the provision of ecosystem services. In Europe, these forests are scarce and threatened by human activities. However, a comprehensive assessment of the magnitude of disturbances in these forests is lacking, due in part to their incomplete mapping.

Estimación de la distribución espacial de los bosques perturbados en Chiapas, México, usando datos satelitales e información auxiliar

open access: yesBotanical Sciences
Background: Maps of disturbed forests help to identify impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Methods using only spectral data to detect disturbance at the regional level have limitations, but expert knowledge and fragmentation analysis can improve estimation.

Urbanization drives partner switching and loss of mutualism in an ant–plant symbiosis

open access: yesEcology, Volume 105, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract Mutualistic interactions between species underpin biodiversity and ecosystem function, but may be lost when partners respond differently to abiotic conditions. Except for a few prominent examples, effects of global anthropogenic change on mutualisms are poorly understood.

Avian phylogenetic and functional diversity are better conserved by land‐sparing than land‐sharing farming in lowland tropical forests

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 10, Page 2497-2509, October 2024.
To minimise the loss of avian phylogenetic diversity and functional traits from farming in the Amazon, it is imperative to protect large blocks of undisturbed and regenerating forests. The intensification required within existing farmlands to make space for spared lands while meeting agricultural demand needs to be sustainable, avoiding long‐term ...

Nest‐site selection and reproductive success of a critically endangered parrot, the Great Green Macaw (Ara ambiguus), in an anthropogenic landscape

open access: yesIbis, Volume 166, Issue 2, Page 518-533, April 2024.
Nest‐site selection is the principal way in which secondary cavity‐nesting species mitigate the negative effects of factors such as predation, parasitism and exposure on reproductive success. Large‐bodied secondary cavity‐nesting birds rely on large cavities in mature trees that are often absent or reduced in anthropogenically disturbed forests. Hence,

Meta‐analysis contrasting freshwater biodiversity in forests and oil palm plantations with and without riparian buffers

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 1, February 2024.
Abstract The expansion of oil palm plantations has led to land‐use change and deforestation in the tropics, which has affected biodiversity. Although the impacts of the crop on terrestrial biodiversity have been extensively reviewed, its effects on freshwater biodiversity remain relatively unexplored.
