Mariposas del bosque tropical seco de Nicaragua

open access: yes
Tropical dry forests support high biodiversity but are globally threatened. The dry forest region of Nicaragua spans the length of the country on the Pacific side, incorporating a number of volcanic locations. Despite the importance of dry forests, there have been few quantitative studies of the entire butterfly fauna of these regions.

Fast‐risky versus slow‐safe life histories mediate resprouting among Caribbean tropical dry forest trees

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 6, Page 1579-1593, June 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Under climate change, shifting disturbance regimes necessitate understanding the linkages between biomass regeneration and plant function to assess forest resilience.

Caatinga diaspores: Descriptive overview of dispersal units of seasonally dry tropical forests and woodlands

open access: yesEcology, Volume 106, Issue 2, February 2025.
Abstract Dispersal unit characteristics provide crucial insights into species ecology and are essential for the conservation and restoration of ecosystems. The Caatinga, the largest ecosystem of seasonally dry tropical forests and woodlands in South America, remains underrepresented in terms of dispersal unit data, which are often scattered across the ...

Land use history and landscape forest cover determine tropical forest recovery

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 10, Page 2365-2381, October 2024.
Both a higher land use intensity and fragmented forest landscape decreases the speed of forest recovery, indicating that human actions and landscape transformation shape the course of succession. Restoration in fragmented forest landscapes through natural regeneration is more suitable in areas with low previous land use intensity, higher forest ...

Growth–defense trade‐offs promote habitat isolation between recently‐diverged species

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 7, July 2024.
Growth–defense trade‐offs have long been implicated in tropical plant diversity, but how do these tradeoffs contribute to reproductive isolation? This study characterizes growth–defense trade‐offs between two recently diverged tropical plants and explore their role in maintaining strong habitat isolation.

Regional differences of functional and taxonomic bird diversity in tropical agroforests of Peru

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 6, Issue 6, June 2024.
We studied changes in the functional and taxonomic dissimilarity of bird communities in cacao agroforests and adjacent forests in two landscapes dominated by different forest types (dry tropical forest and subtropical rainforest). We found that the functional traits that are most vulnerable to disappear in agroforests at increasing distance from forest

La integridad biológica como herramienta de valoración cuantitativa del estado de conservación del bosque seco en Colombia

open access: yesBiota Colombiana, 2017

Co‐production of agroecological innovations to improve sustainability in South American fruit farms

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 6, Issue 2, Page 833-848, April 2024.
Abstract Agricultural intensification and expansion are the main drivers of biodiversity loss that continue to increase this century, especially in South America. International markets and global policy provide incentives and frameworks to address this, but these are unlikely to be effective unless farmers on the ground are enabled and motivated to ...
