Associations between a feral equid and the Sonoran Desert ecosystem Asociaciones Entre un Equino Salvaje y el Ecosistema del Desierto Sonorense

open access: yesWildlife Monographs, Volume 215, Issue 1, July 2024.
We documented negative associations between feral burros and several elements of the Sonoran Desert ecosystem, and suggest that differences associated with this feral equid may be ecologically important and may have the potential to affect the long‐term viability of this ecosystem.

The conflict between Rights of Nature and mining in Ecuador: Implications of the Los Cedros Cloud Forest case for biodiversity conservation

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 6, Issue 3, Page 1096-1115, June 2024.
Abstract Global emergence of Rights of Nature (RoN) has gained momentum since Ecuador became the first country to constitutionally recognize it in 2008. The shift from perceiving nature as an object, to granting it legal subjecthood, can revolutionize protection of ecological systems.

Implications of the scale of detection for inferring co‐occurrence patterns from paired camera traps and acoustic recorders

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 38, Issue 3, June 2024.
Abstract Multifunctional landscapes that support economic activities and conservation of biological diversity (e.g., cattle ranches with native forest) are becoming increasingly important because small remnants of native forest may comprise the only habitat left for some wildlife species. Understanding the co‐occurrence between wildlife and disturbance

Co‐production of agroecological innovations to improve sustainability in South American fruit farms

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 6, Issue 2, Page 833-848, April 2024.
Abstract Agricultural intensification and expansion are the main drivers of biodiversity loss that continue to increase this century, especially in South America. International markets and global policy provide incentives and frameworks to address this, but these are unlikely to be effective unless farmers on the ground are enabled and motivated to ...

Biogeographic context mediates multifaceted diversity‐productivity relationships in island and mainland forests

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 112, Issue 4, Page 800-816, April 2024.
We used inventory data from climatically similar forests on the Canary Islands and mainland Spain, to investigate how productivity is determined by ecological and evolutionary processes associated with the biogeographic context. We found that the number of trees increased multifaceted diversity and productivity in mainland and island forests, and that ...
