Effects of breast-feeding duration, bottle-feeding duration and non-nutritive sucking habits on the occlusal characteristics of primary dentition

open access: yesBMC Pediatrics, 2015
BackgroundEarly transition from breastfeeding and non-nutritive sucking habits may be related to occlusofacial abnormalities as environmental factors. Previous studies have not taken into account the potential for interactions between feeding practice ...

Edible Pneumatic Battery for Sustained and Repeated Robot Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work presents an edible energy source and valve system to power soft, pneumatically driven edible robots. A chemical reaction between sodium bicarbonate and citric acid generates carbon dioxide gas, and a pressure‐triggered edible valve enables self‐repetitive motion of the edible actuator.

Facile synthesis of chitosan-capped ZnS quantum dots as an eco-friendly fluorescence sensor for rapid determination of bisphenol A in water and plastic samples [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This paper describes a novel eco-friendly fluorescence sensor for determination of bisphenol A (BPA) based on chitosan-capped ZnS quantum dots (QDs). By using safe and inexpensive materials, nontoxic ZnS QDs were synthesized via an environment-friendly ...

The Geometry of Layer 2/3 Cortical Sound Processing in Slow Wave Sleep

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Sleep is associated with a sensory disconnection whose mechanisms remain elusive. Large neuronal population recordings in the auditory cortex revealed that, in NREM sleep, the neural code for sounds is highly similar to wakefulness, but coordinated modulations of neuron responsiveness intermittently disconnect the local cortical networks from sensory ...
