Bottom current measurements in the labrador sea

Twenty-one spot current meter measurements document a high-velocity bottom flow in places greater than 20 cm/s around the periphery of the Labrador basin and Greenland continental margin. These data are consistent with previous hydrographic and current measurements in the area.

Abstract The theory of Hill and Johnson for upwelling over the shelf break is modified to give agreement with the work of Killworth. It is shown that when upwelling occurs over a discontinuity in bottom slope, this upwelling does not penetrate into the surface Ekman layer.
