Escapement of gadoid fish beneath a commercial bottom trawl: Relevance to the overall trawl selectivity

open access: yesFisheries Research, 2006
Escapement of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and saithe (Pollachius virens) beneath a commercial bottom trawl, rigged with a 60 cm diameter rockhopper gear, was studied in the Barents Sea. The study was performed off the coast of north Norway in March/April 2003.

Contrasting life‐history strategies of three sympatric icefish species in the northern Scotia Sea

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Comprehending a species' life‐history strategies is crucial to inform effective conservation efforts. Commercial fishing impacts icefish (family: Channichthyidae) in the Scotia Sea, but detailed information on species‐specific life histories remains largely unknown.

The effect of bottom trawling on benthic diversity [PDF]

open access: yes
The effect of bottom trawling on marine biodiversity is a hot topic. Recent high-resolution estimates suggest that Danish fisheries annually disturb over a quarter of the seabed in the Danish EEZ.

Effects of bottom trawling and primary production on the composition of biological traits in benthic assemblages [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Although many studies have investigated the effects of disturbance and environmental drivers on marine ecosystems, comparatively few have studied their interactions.

The state of knowledge on four families of Syngnathoidei fishes (Teleostei: Syngnathiformes): Aulostomidae, Centriscidae, Fistulariidae and Solenostomidae

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Knowledge on the ecology and life‐history traits of coastal marine species is vital to inform their conservation and management, especially as their coastal habitats come under increasing threats. However, such data have never been collated for four of the five families in the suborder Syngnathoidei—the close relatives of the better‐studied ...

CONSTRUCTION ANALYSIS OF BOTTOM GILLNET AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO BOTTOM TRAWL IN PEKALONGAN WATERS

open access: yesRussian Journal of Agricultural and Socio-Economic Sciences, 2019
A bottom trawl is a fishing tool that is not recommended by the government to capture demersal fish resources in Pekalongan waters. Therefore, a bottom gillnet is an alternative substitute for bottom trawl fishing gear in catching demersal fish. This study aimed to technically analyze bottom gillnet fishing gear and the composition of its catch in ...

Intra‐annual energy density cycles of spring‐ and fall‐spawning Atlantic herring Clupea harengus reveal different reproductive allocation tactics

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Atlantic herring Clupea harengus are total spawners that exhibit a large degree of reproductive plasticity and have substantial intra‐annual variation in their energetic condition. Recent research suggests that the species may be declining in energetic condition in the northwest Atlantic Ocean from the few historical records, but comparisons ...

Effects of deep bottom trawling in sedimentary organic matter during different trawling seasons on the flanks of La Fonera Canyon, NW Mediterranean [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly, 7-12 April 2019, Vienna, Austria.-- 1 pageBottom trawling is one of the main mechanisms inducing sediment resuspension in deep-sea environments, leading to erosion and depletion of sedimentary organic ...
