Lost in translation? Multi-metric macrobenthos indicators and bottom trawling [PDF]
The member states of the European Union use multi-metric macrobenthos indicators to monitor the ecological status of their marine waters in relation to the Water Framework and Marine Strategy Framework Directives.

Food web feedbacks drive the response of benthic macrofauna to bottom trawling [PDF]
Bottom trawl fisheries have significant effects on benthic habitats and communities, and these effects have been studied intensively in the last decades.

Effects of chronic bottom trawling disturbance on benthic biomass, production and size spectra in different habitats [PDF]
Bottom trawling has widespread impacts on benthic communities and habitats. It is argued that the impact of chronic bottom trawling on benthic infauna depends on the natural disturbance levels to which benthic communities are adapted. We analysed biomass,

Bottom Trawling. One of the most common ways to catch fish is by dragging nets along the seafloor. This causes changes in the plants and animals that live there. When the same areas are trawled frequently, the community on the seafloor can be drastically changed. Long-lived species such as corals and sponges are severely affected.

Numerical modeling of bottom trawling-induced sediment transport and accumulation in La Fonera submarine canyon, northwestern Mediterranean Sea [PDF]
Bottom trawling leads to recurrent sediment resuspension events over fishing grounds. Recent studies have shown how bottom trawling can drive seascape reshaping at large spatial scales and enhance sediment transport in submarine canyons, which ...

Cable behavior in bottom trawling
Ocean Engineering, 1985Abstract A method of numerical analysis based on iterative solutions of quasi-linearized differential equations describing the behavior of long cable segments is developed. The method is implemented in a computer program for use on small computer facilities, such as desktop-sized computers.

Effects of bottom trawling on ecosystem functioning
Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 2008By combining field observations with data from controlled mesocosm experiments this study demonstrated that bottom trawling has the potential to cause long-term impacts on sediment nutrient fluxes. Field observations confirmed that trawling reduced the density of important bioturbators in the study area, but revealed only weak effects of trawling on ...

Preliminary bottom trawling experiments with a newly designed separator fish trawl
Fisheries Research, 1991Abstract A separator trawl was designed by introducing a short horizontal panel of net webbing between the upper and lower belly of a 29.7 m/34.2 m (head rope/foot rope) high opening bottom trawl (HOBT), dividing the net into two equal horizontal compartments terminating in two independent codends.

Marine litter in bottom trawls off the Portuguese coast
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2015Benthic marine litter along the Portuguese coast, was recorded in 14 trips on stern trawlers covering a distance of 2117 km and an area of 56.2 km(2), average depth range 90-349 m. 2034 items of marine litter were registered, 76% were plastics and 38.6% were originated from fishing related activities.
