The validity of the boussinesq approximation for liquids and gases
International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 1976Abstract A new method for obtaining approximate equations for natural convection flows is presented. The systematic application of this method leads to explicit conditions for the neglect of various terms. It is shown that this method allows the specification of the conditions under which the traditional Boussinesq approximation applies to a given ...

Buoyancy-driven flows beyond the Boussinesq approximation: A brief review
International Communications in Heat and Mass Transfer, 2021The well-known Boussinesq (also known as Oberbeck—Boussinesq) approximation is still the most common approach for the numerical simulation of natural convection problems.

Boussinesq-type approximation for second-grade fluids
We derive the equivalent of the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation for second-grade fluids. We find that two new nondimensional numbers (in comparison to the Newtonian model) have to be taken into account in order to arrive at the approximation.
