The landscape of fear in cattle farms? How the presence of barn swallow influences the activity of pest flies

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 6, Page 1269-1278, June 2024.
Barn swallows are effective biological control agents for lowering pest fly activity in livestock farms. Farmers were actively involved in swallow conservation within their sheds, also with a shared memorandum‐of‐intent. Harnessing the ecosystem services supplied by farmland birds could bring positive outcomes for people and biodiversity.

Tracing the bounds on Bell-type inequalities

open access: yes, 2004
Bell-type inequalities and violations thereof reveal the fundamental differences between standard probability theory and its quantum counterpart. In the course of previous investigations ultimate bounds on quantum mechanical violations have been found ...

YBX1 Promotes Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Progression via m5C‐Dependent SMOX mRNA Stabilization

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 11, Issue 20, May 28, 2024.
Liu et al. identify that YBX1, an m5C reader protein, is upregulated in ESCC tissues. Further, YBX1 promotes ESCC progression by stabilizing SMOX mRNA and consequently activating the mTOCR1 signaling pathway in an NSUN2‐mediated m5C modification‐dependent manner.

Impact of dust cooling on direct collapse black hole formation

open access: yes, 2016
Observations of quasars at $ z > 6$ suggest the presence of black holes with a few times $\rm 10^9 ~M_{\odot}$. Numerous models have been proposed to explain their existence including the direct collapse which provides massive seeds of $\rm 10^5~M_{\odot}

Effect of leukoreduction on the omics phenotypes of canine packed red blood cells during refrigerated storage

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Volume 38, Issue 3, Page 1498-1511, May/June 2024.
Abstract Background Red blood cell (RBC) storage promotes biochemical and morphological alterations, collectively referred to as storage lesions (SLs). Studies in humans have identified leukoreduction (LR) as a critical processing step that mitigates SLs. To date no study has evaluated the impact of LR on metabolic SLs in canine blood units using omics

Lifetime milk production of Holstein cattle in the humid tropics compared to Holstein‐Gyr and Holstein‐Brahman crosses

open access: yesReproduction in Domestic Animals, Volume 59, Issue 5, May 2024.
Abstract Crossbred cattle are commonly used for milk production in the tropics, combining the potential benefits of pure breeds with the heterosis effects of the offspring. However, no comprehensive assessment of lifetime productivity for crossbred versus purebred cattle in low‐altitude tropical environments has been carried out.

KROME - a package to embed chemistry in astrophysical simulations

open access: yes, 2014
Chemistry plays a key role in many astrophysical situations regulating the cooling and the thermal properties of the gas, which are relevant during gravitational collapse, the evolution of disks and the fragmentation process.

Experimental noise-resistant Bell-inequality violations for polarization-entangled photons

open access: yes, 2006
We experimentally demonstrate that violations of Bell's inequalities for two-photon polarization-entangled states with colored noise are extremely robust, whereas this is not the case for states with white noise.
