A model for a strong plasma shock wave with a structure determined by ion wave instabilities has been developed. The magnetic field structure of the shock wave is further investigated and found to have many features in agreement with satellite observations of the earth's bow shock.

Abstract It is clear that the primary energy source for magnetospheric processes is the solar wind, but the process of energy transfer from the solar wind into the magnetosphere, or rather, to convecting magnetospheric plasma, appears to be rather complicated.
