Magnetosphere of Mercury [PDF]

open access: yes
A model magnetosphere of Mercury using Mariner 10 data is presented. Diagrams of the bow shock wave and magnetopause are shown. The analysis of Mariner 10 data indicates that the magnetic field of the planet is intrinsic.

Multipoint Observations of a SLAMS Evolution and Its Merger With Whistler Waves

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
We report multipoint observations of a merger between a Short Large‐Amplitude Magnetic Structure (SLAMS) and 1‐Hz whistler wave packets upstream of Earth's quasi‐parallel bow shock.

Computational Hypersonic Aerodynamics with Emphasis on Earth Reentry Capsules

open access: yesINCAS Bulletin, 2016
The temperature in the front region of a hypersonic vehicle nose can be extremely high, for example, reaching approximately 11 000 K at a Mach number of 36 (Apollo reentry) due to the bow shock wave.

Magnetohydrodynamic and gasdynamic theories for planetary bow waves [PDF]

open access: yes
A bow wave was previously observed in the solar wind upstream of each of the first six planets. The observed properties of these bow waves and the associated plasma flows are outlined, and those features identified that can be described by a continuum ...

Impact of a Near-Surface Plasma Region on the Bow Shock Wave and Aerodynamic Characteristics of a High-Speed Model in Xenon

open access: yesFluids
The main objective of this study is to demonstrate the active influence on the location of the bow shock wave, as well as on the parameters of an aerodynamic body, of a gas discharge organized near the frontal surface, between the body and the bow shock ...

Correlation of bow shock plasma wave turbulence with solar wind parameters [PDF]

open access: yes
The r.m.s. field strengths of electrostatic and electromagnetic turbulence in the earth's bow shock, measured in the frequency range 20 Hz to 200 kHz with IMP-6 satellite, are found to correlate with specific solar wind parameters measured upstream of ...

Electron plasma oscillations associated with type 3 radio emissions and solar electrons [PDF]

open access: yes
An extensive study of the IMP-6 and IMP-8 plasma and radio wave data was performed to try to find electron plasma oscillations associated with type III radio noise bursts and low-energy solar electrons.

Hybrid Simulation of Magnetosheath Jet‐Driven Bow Waves

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
High‐speed jets (HSJs) are commonly observed in the Earth's magnetosheath. The HSJs can drive shock‐like bow waves when compressing the ambient plasma, which are important for the HSJ's evolution and the energization of charged particles. Here we present
