I the presence of an embolus, spasm of a vessel should not be relieved before embolectomy, lest the embolus dislodges itself and becomes unapproachable to surgery, or lodges itself in a more vital part of the body. However, in the case to be described, in view of the patient's grave condition, local anaesthesia was imperative.
