Ecological benefits of consistent expression of posterolateral spines in Brachionus calyciflorus

open access: yesJournal of Freshwater Ecology, 2022
Plasticity of spine morphology is a universal phenomenon in rotifers. Some Brachionus calyciflorus clones consistently develop two posterolateral spines (PS) with similar length (Type A), but others (Type B) not. The underlying mechanisms remain unknown.

Effect of salinity stress on the life history variables of Branchipus schaefferi Fisher, 1834 (Crustacea: Anostraca) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
BACKGROUND: Freshwater anostracans inhabit ephemeral water bodies in which as the water level decreases due to evaporation the salt concentration increases. Thus, for most anostracans salinity becomes the major stress factor.

Wolbachia in Antarctic terrestrial invertebrates: Absent or undiscovered?

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 16, Issue 6, December 2024.
Endosymbiotic bacteria Wolbachia are recognized for their role in influencing host survival and stress resistance, particularly in cold environmental conditions across various species. However, our analysis of available data reveals a notable absence of Wolbachia in species abundant in the extreme cold conditions of Antarctica.

Use of eDNA and conventional sampling methods to survey rock pool (gnamma) biodiversity on granite inselbergs

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 49, Issue 8, August 2024.
Environmental DNA sampling coupled with high‐throughput sequencing is increasingly recognized as a useful method for assessing biodiversity with potential applications in terrestrial environments. Rock pools on granite inselbergs support diverse aquatic communities, yet the application of eDNA to document their biodiversity is lacking.

Phototransformation of Amlodipine in Aqueous Solution: Toxicity of the Drug and Its Photoproduct on Aquatic Organisms

open access: yesInternational Journal of Photoenergy, 2007
The phototransformation of amlodipine in water was investigated under various conditions. A quantum yield ΦS2.2×10−4 and a half-life time t1/2 0.419 days were calculated when the drug in water (10−4 M) was exposed to sunlight.

Exploring Alternatives for Marine Toxicity Testing: Initial Evaluation of Fish Embryo and Mysid Tests

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology and Chemistry, Volume 43, Issue 6, Page 1285-1299, June 2024.
Abstract Current regulations require that toxicity assessments be performed using standardized toxicity testing methods, often using fish. Recent legislation in both the European Union and United States has mandated that toxicity testing alternatives implement the 3Rs of animal research (replacement, reduction, and refinement) whenever possible.

Combined effect of concentrations of algal food (Chlorella vulgaris) and salt (sodium chloride) on the population growth of Brachionus calyciflorus and Brachionus patulus (Rotifera)

open access: yesRevista de Biología Tropical, 2003
Salinity is an important variable influencing the density and diversity of rotifers. Studies on salt tolerance of rotifers have so far concentrated on euryhaline species while very little information is available on noneuryhaline taxa.
