ABSTRACT The soldier crab, Mictyris guinotae, is a dominant intertidal crustacean associated with sand flats in the vicinity of the Urauchi River estuary on Iriomote Island, Japan. We compared various aspects of its reproductive biology at two sites (the river mouth and upper reach) on exposed bare sand flats 300 m and 3000 m upstream from the mouth ...

The Overlooked Threat of Global Warming on Elasmobranch Fertility
ABSTRACT Climate change is increasingly recognised as a critical threat to global biodiversity, yet its impacts on reproductive processes remain poorly understood in many marine taxa. Elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) represent a particularly vulnerable group due to their peculiar life histories, low fecundity, and diverse reproductive modes.

Seasonal effects of farmer‐managed livestock grazing exclusions on bird communities in Burkina Faso
Abstract Anthropogenic activities such as livestock grazing and deforestation are primary causes of land degradation in drylands such as the Sahel Zone of Africa, threatening the livelihoods of rural communities and biodiversity. To restore degraded habitats, measures such as farmer‐managed livestock grazing exclusion, where the native vegetation is ...

Phylogenetic patterns and the adaptive evolution of osmoregulation in fiddler crabs (Brachyura, Uca)
Salinity is the primary driver of osmoregulatory evolution in decapods, and may have influenced their diversification into different osmotic niches. In semi-terrestrial crabs, hyper-osmoregulatory ability favors sojourns into burrows and dilute media ...

Twenty‐Two Years of Shrub Encroachment and Its Effects on Bird Communities in an African Savanna
Global open terrestrial ecosystems continue to be impacted by shrub encroachment. We found that an increase in shrub cover reduced bird species occupancy and altered community assemblage in an African savanna. Land managers can minimize biodiversity impacts by controlling shrub density within conservation areas.

ABSTRACT Large‐sized extinct crab specimens recovered from Waitoetoe beach, North Island, New Zealand form the basis for a new species of ‘Southern Giant Crab’, Pseudocarcinus karlraubenheimeri n. sp. The specimens originate from the upper Miocene Urenui Formation (approximately 8.8 myr) of the Taranaki Basin, in which a series of volcanoes of the ...

ABSTRACT Aim To investigate the spatial patterns of species richness (SR), phylogenetic diversity (PD) and phylogenetic endemism (PE) in bycatch decapod crustaceans along the Brazilian Exclusive Economic Zone and to assess the influence of environmental variables and trawling effort on these diversity indices. Location Brazilian Exclusive Economic Zone.
