Jurassic brachyurans of the genus Bucculentum

Zootaxa, 2021
The genus Bucculentum Schweitzer & Feldmann, 2009 is exceptional among the brachyuran decapods in having the augenrest dorsally inclined. Hitherto, the genus comprised two species, both from European Upper Jurassic localities; here, further two species are described, Bucculentum horstkuscheli, n. sp. and B. plettenbergense, n.

Carrying Behavior in Brachyuran Crabs

Journal of Crustacean Biology, 1986
ABSTRACT Carrying is a behavior in which the last one or two pairs of pereiopods of a crab are used to lift and hold an object dorsally over the body. This behavior is found in the families Homolidae, Latreilliidae, Dromiidae, Tymolidae, and Dorippidae.

Antimicrobial Lipids from the Hemolymph of Brachyuran Crabs

Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 2009
The potential of marine crabs as a source of biologically active products is largely unexplored. In the present study, antimicrobial activity of the hemolymph (plasma) and hemocytes (plasma cells) of six brachyuran crabs was investigated against 16 pathogenic strains.

AUTOTOMY IN THE BRACHYURAN, UCA PUGNAX

The Biological Bulletin, 1937
A study of the extent to which the anomuran Porcellana platycheles will autotomize its legs on single stimulation of successive appendages has shown (Hoadley, 1934) that there is a clear-cut and fundamental difference between the behavior of males and of females bearing eggs.

Accuracy and standardization of brachyuran larval descriptions

Invertebrate Reproduction & Development, 1998
Summary There is a need for improvement and standardization in larval descriptions for them to become useful not only for identification purposes but also in comparative and phylogenetic studies. Details of the rearing technique and equipment used should be given, the spent female crab and representative larval stages need to be deposited at a national

Distribution and Affinities of the Brachyuran Crustacea

Systematic Zoology, 1960
KNOWLEDGE of the decapod crustaceans, and particularly, of the Brachyura, or short-tailed crabs, of the Baja California-Gulf of California region, goes back barely a century and may be said to date from the early work of John Xantus, who established for the U. S.

Behavioral adaptations in larvae of brachyuran crabs: A review

Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 2016
Abstract Larval development in brachyuran crabs includes a number of zoeal stages followed by a single megalopal stage. Zoeae and megalopae are relatively strong swimmers, and movement up or down in the water column takes advantage of vertical shear in ambient currents with consequent transport in the horizontal dimension.
