Cross-species oncogenomics offers insight into human muscle-invasive bladder cancer [PDF]

open access: yesGenome Biology, 2023
Background In humans, muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) is highly aggressive and associated with a poor prognosis. With a high mutation load and large number of altered genes, strategies to delineate key driver events are necessary.

Volatile emission in bracken fern is induced by jasmonates but not by Spodoptera littoralis or Strongylogaster multifasciata herbivory. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Jasmonate-mediated regulation of VOC emission has been extensively investigated in higher plants, however, only little is known about VOC production and its regulation in ferns.

Bovine upper alimentary squamous cell carcinoma associated with bracken fern poisoning: Clinical-pathological aspects and etiopathogenesis of 100 cases. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Upper digestive tract (UDT) cancer is rare in cattle, however in Southern Brazil, the UDT squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are relatively common and have been associated with bracken fern consumption and the presence of papillomas.

De novo characterization of the gametophyte transcriptome in bracken fern, Pteridium aquilinum [PDF]

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2011
Background Because of their phylogenetic position and unique characteristics of their biology and life cycle, ferns represent an important lineage for studying the evolution of land plants.

Bracken fern control with several herbicides

open access: yesCalifornia Agriculture, 1978
Because bracken fern produces phytotoxins that disturb the normal development of other plants, insects, and animals, the chemicals that control it are particularly important.

Modelling landscape vulnerability to the Bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) invasion in a remnant urban Sandstone Sourveldt grassland ecosystem

open access: yesScientific African, 2023
The Bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) is one of the world's most pervasive alien invasive plants, exerting adverse effects on the sustainability and balance of remnant urban green ecosystems and thereby threatening the provision of valuable ecological ...

Measuring the Effects of “Opportunistic Defense” of the Bracken Fern, \u3ci\u3e(Pteridium Aquilinum)\u3c/i\u3e by Patrolling Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute in South Central Michigan [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
In this study we show that in South Central Michigan (Pierce Cedar Creek Institute) eight ant species patrol bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) during the sensitive crozier growth stage.

Suspected Case of Persistent Thiamin Deficiency in a Hand-Reared Caribou Calf. [PDF]

open access: yesZoo Biol
A hand‐reared caribou calf experienced a suspected thiamine deficiency for > 3 months. Clinical signs of disease were largely neurological and temporarily relieved with thiamin injections, but did not fully resolve until a rumen transfaunation was performed. ABSTRACT Hand‐reared animals are invaluable and irreplaceable in studies of wildlife nutrition.
