Palynomorphs of brackish and marine species in cores from the freshwater Lake Sapanca, NW Turkey [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Lake Sapanca, which is located on the Sakarya–Sapanca–İzmit corridor in NW Turkey, is a freshwater lake with numerous fish farms in its catchment. Palynological analyses including non-pollen palynomorphs of a short (38.5 cm) and a longer sediment core ...

Bioinspired Polypeptide Dendrimer‐Modified Thin‐Film Composite Membranes for Selective Lithium‐Magnesium Separation with DFT Insights

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We fabricated a biomimetic dendrimer‐modified thin‐film nanocomposite membrane with a coordination‐assisted ion‐selective interface. pH‐responsive polypeptide sites preferentially bind Mg2+ and promote Li+ permeation, as predicted by density functional theory calculations of metal‐ligand interactions.

Responses of life-history traits of brackish- and freshwater populations of the water strider to NaCl Aquarius paludum (Hemiptera: Gerridae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2009
The water strider Aquarius paludum inhabits the surfaces of a wide variety of freshwater habitats both temporary and permanent. It can also live on the surface brackish-water around river mouths.

Development of a Synthetic 3D Platform for Compartmentalized Kidney In Vitro Disease Modeling

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A fully synthetic, compartmentalized 3D kidney disease model is introduced. The kidney model combines a PEG‐based hydrogel matrix with anisotropic, enzymatically degradable rod‐shaped microgels to spatially arrange a triple co‐culture of key renal epithelial, endothelial, and fibroblast cells.

Ion Selectivity in Brackish Water Desalination by Reverse Osmosis: Theory, Measurements, and Implications

open access: yes, 2020
Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a membrane-based technology for water desalination. Of paramount importance is the understanding of ion selectivity in mixtures of salts, i.e., to what extent the membrane retains one ion more than another in a multicomponent salt

Biofilm‐Antagonist Ginger‐Based 3D‐Printable Photoresins for Complex Implant Designs Exhibiting Advanced Multifunctional Biomedical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This work offers unique Ginger‐based 3D‐printable resins that can print customizable high‐resolution complex designs. The customizable printing backbone of Zingerol prints also mimics various human bones' strength. Acquisition of in‐vivo biocompatibility in rat model with no severe inflammatory response, along with in‐vitro antioxidant and ex‐vivo anti‐

A comparison of aquaporin expression in mosquito larvae (Aedes aegypti) that develop in hypo-osmotic freshwater and iso-osmotic brackish water.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
The mosquito Aedes aegypti vectors the arboviral diseases yellow fever, dengue, Zika and chikungunya. Larvae are usually found developing in freshwater; however, more recently they have been increasingly found in brackish water, potential habitats which ...
