Agonistic Behavior by Three-toed Sloths, Bradypus variegatus
Biotropica, 1989A three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus) rapidly ascended a cecropia tree, fought briefly and intensely with another adult male, and descended even more rapidly. Fighting was accompanied by short, strident vocalizations. The aggressor perhaps detected the occupant from a distance using the sexually dimorphic dorsal markings.

The comparative phylogeographic study of the maned sloth (Bradypus torquatus) and the three-toed sloth (Bradypus variegatus) was performed using a segment of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region. We examined 19 B. torquatus from two regions and 47 B. variegatus from three distant regions of Atlantic forest.
