Brain Tumors [PDF]

open access: yesSeminars in Nuclear Medicine, 2012
This review addresses the specific contributions of nuclear medicine techniques, and especially positron emission tomography (PET), for diagnosis and management of brain tumors. (18)F-Fluorodeoxyglucose PET has particular strengths in predicting prognosis and differentiating cerebral lymphoma from nonmalignant lesions.

Sex and Cardiovascular Function in Relation to Vascular Brain Injury in Patients with Cognitive Complaints

open access: yes, 2021
BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence shows sex differences in manifestations of vascular brain injury in memory clinic patients. We hypothesize that this is explained by sex differences in cardiovascular function.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

BRAIN DEATH

open access: yesBritish Journal of Anaesthesia, 1981
Mechanical ventilation frequently saves lives that are threatened by temporary respiratory failure; but when breathing stops due to irreversible brain damage ventilation only prolongs the process of dying, as organs serially cease to function. The possibility of extending from a few minutes to many days the interval between final failure of the brain ...

Cerebral blood flow and cognitive functioning in patients with disorders along the heart–brain axis: Cerebral blood flow and the heart–brain axis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Introduction: We examined the role of hemodynamic dysfunction in cognition by relating cerebral blood flow (CBF), measured with arterial spin labeling (ASL), to cognitive functioning, in patients with heart failure (HF), carotid occlusive disease (COD ...
