Annual Review of Pathology: Mechanisms of Disease, 2006
Aging is accompanied by cognitive decline in a major segment of the population and is the primary risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and other prevalent neurodegenerative disorders. Despite this central role in disease pathogenesis and morbidity, the aging of the brain has not been well understood at a molecular level.

Brain aging is part of the aging of the whole body, largely determining the success of general aging and the quality of life of an older person. Brain aging is a complex multifactorial process that occurs throughout a human’s life, which includes changes at subcellular, tissue, and organ levels as well as at physiological level, mediating changes in

The structural brain-age makes predictions based on changes in tissue integrity. Adding cerebrovascular MRI biomarkers may add sensitivity to physiological and metabolic changes, hence complementing structural brain-age, and possibly improving its early pathology sensitivity.

A recent interest in aging of the nervous system is related to the remarkable increase in the numbers of elderly persons throughout the world. As a reflection of the added years, pathologies in the older person have also increased. Primary among those which affect the activities and behavior of these people are the dementias, especially Alzheimer's ...

Changes in neurons, glial cells, synapse morphologic and electrophysiologic appearance, and neurotransmission mechanisms during normal aging are considered for review in this article. These processes not only are fundamental in the neurobiology of normal aging but also are implicated in the pathogenesis of aging.

Age increases brain complexity
Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology, 1996This study investigated age-related changes in the human brain function using both traditional EEG analysis (power spectra) and the correlational dimension, a measure reflecting the complexity of EEG dynamics and, probably, the complexity of neurophysiological processes generating the EEG.

The aging brain is shaped by many structural and functional alterations. Recent cross-disciplinary efforts have uncovered powerful and integrated adaptive mechanisms that promote brain health and prevent functional decline during aging. Here, we review some of the most robust adaptive mechanisms and how they can be engaged to protect, and restore the ...

The pandemic is transforming neurology. Long COVID will linger, neurologic diseases will increase, and technology, artificial intelligence, and new virtual worlds will usher a new age of the brain and new roles for neurologists. The pandemic has compelled international collaboration, greatly increased communications, and accelerated drug and vaccines ...
