Numerical simulation of an ice-strengthened bulk carrier in brash ice channel [PDF]

open access: yesOcean Engineering, 2020
In this paper, the CFD-DEM coupling numerical method was applied to study the ship resistance of a certain type of ice-strengthened Panama bulk carrier in the brash ice channel. The ship-water interaction is established under Euler framework, and the ship-ice interaction is realized by means of the DEM method under Lagrange framework.

Research on self-propulsion simulation of a polar ship in a brash ice channel based on body force model

open access: yesInternational Journal of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, 2023
Main engine power prediction is important for polar ships operating in brash ice channels, which is one of the most important concerns of shipowners. Self-propulsion simulation is an efficient method to predict the developed power.

Investigation of model-scale brash ice properties

open access: yesOcean Engineering, 2021
Abstract A brash ice channel is a typical operation condition for ice-going commercial vessels. The Finnish-Swedish Ice Class Rules (FSICR) define the vessels ice class performance requirements particularly in a brash ice channel. The vessel performance can be verified using model tests, which are conducted according to the FSICR guidelines. However,

Implementation of ship performance test in brash ice channel

open access: yesOcean Engineering, 2017
Abstract Vessels operating in the Baltic Sea and northern regions should satisfy the ice class rules for safe navigation; thus, shipyards should determine the most effective propulsion capacity and hull form during the design stage of a vessel. This can be done using a model test in an ice model basin and/or Finnish Swedish Ice Class Rules (FSICR ...

Numerical simulation of fatigue damage in offshore wind turbines under wind-ice coupling effects in brash ice regions

open access: yesResults in Engineering
Fatigue failure is a critical concern for offshore wind turbines (OWTs). In cold-region seas, the presence of sea ice necesitates the consideration of ice loads in the design of OWTs.

Numerical Simulation on the Resistance Performance of Ice-Going Container Ship Under Brash Ice Conditions

open access: yesChina Ocean Engineering, 2018
Ice resistance prediction is a critical issue in the preliminary design of ships navigating brash ice conditions, which is closely related to the safety of a ship to navigate encounter brash ice, and has significant effects on the kinds of propellers and motor power needed.

Brash ice macroporosity and piece size distribution in ship channels

open access: yesCold Regions Science and Technology
Merchant vessels' performance on brash ice plays an important role in navigation in fast ice conditions in Northern Baltic ports. Among many parameters, the piece size distribution and macroporosity of the brash ice influence the accuracy of the model simulations of ship performance in brash ice.

Large-scale shear test of brash ice

open access: yesOcean Engineering, 2022
A large-scale shear apparatus has been originally developed and built to test the mechanical properties of coarsegrained material. It was used to evaluate the shear behaviour of brash ice. The brash ice blocks were collected at Luleå harbour in two separate measuring campaigns in March 2020 and March 2021.

Coupling of Finite Element Method and Peridynamics to Simulate Ship-Ice Interaction

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2023
In this work, the finite element method (PD-FEM) coupling strategy is used to simulate ship-ice interaction. Two numerical benchmark tests are selected to validate the coupling approach and its program.
