Unprincipled Principals in the Accountability Chain: Autonomy and Political Control Within Tax Administration in a Developing Country Context

open access: yesFinancial Accountability &Management, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT SDG 16 emphasizes the need for accountable institutions, often based on the assumption that public officials are accountable to politicians, who in turn are accountable to citizens. However, in many developing countries, neopatrimonial governance can weaken this accountability chain, as politicians themselves may act as “unprincipled ...

Lack of Compliance in Gillnet Fisheries Regulations Increases Risk to a Vulnerable Species

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This article presents an analysis of regulatory compliance in a Brazilian gillnet fishery, based on Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) tracking data. Satellite transmissions records, interpreted as proxies for gillnet haulings events, were analyzed and classified using a neural network to assess the level of compliance of the gillnet fleet.

Genetic Relationships Between Residual Gain and Economically Important Traits in Nellore Cattle

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Sustainable beef production requires identifying animals with superior feed efficiency to reduce environmental impact and production costs. This study aimed to estimate heritability and genetic correlations between residual gain (RG) and growth, reproductive, carcass and feed efficiency traits in Nellore cattle.

Unreachable, Inescapable: Sustainable Development as Normative Camouflage in EU–MERCOSUR Trade

open access: yesJCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies, EarlyView.
Abstract This article examines how sustainable development functions as a mechanism of stabilising asymmetry in North–South trade governance, using the European Union (EU)–Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) agreement as a case study. Whilst sustainability is often framed as a normative good or institutional advance, the article shows instead how it ...
