Distribution of Wave Impact Forces From Breaking and Non-Breaking Waves
Volume 4: Ocean Engineering; Ocean Renewable Energy; Ocean Space Utilization, Parts A and B, 2009Impact loads from waves on vessels and coastal structures are highly complex and may involve wave breaking, making these changes difficult to estimate numerically or empirically. Results from previous experiments have shown a wide range of forces and pressures measured from breaking and non-breaking waves, with no clear trend between wave ...

Forced Symmetry Breaking: Theory and Applications
1999In this paper we want to present some ideas concerning the behavior of equivariant systems under small perturbations of their symmetry. We will touch these questions, discuss some applications and provide references to the literature. These references include details of the mathematical issues as well as further potential applications.

Blow-open forces on double-break contacts
IEEE Transactions on Components, Packaging, and Manufacturing Technology: Part A, 1994Measurements were made on a double-break contact geometries, commonly used in power distribution devices, to determine contact dynamics under various short circuit fault conditions. These measurements lead to a modification to improve contact dynamics during a short circuit. The modification consisted of a guide-rod which prevented contact arm rotation

Breaking Wave Forces on Vertical Walls
Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering, 1989Discussions and comparisons are provided of dynamic breaking wave forces on vertical walls predicted by Minikin and Goda methods. Normalized wave forces computed by both methods are plotted as functions of water depth to deepwater wavelength ration, seabed slope, and superstructure and foundation dimension ratio.

Break Point? Iraq and America's Military Forces
Survival, 2006In terms of its doctrine and training, the United States military has been transformed by the war in Iraq. The army, which is carrying the principal load among the military services, has embraced counter-insurgency as one of its primary missions. These changes reflect the military's ability to adapt to the changing battlefield.
