Infection after breast implant surgery occurs in 1.1% to 2.5% of procedures performed for augmentation and up to 35% of procedures performed for reconstruction after mastectomy. Most infections result from skin organisms and occur in the immediate postoperative period, although infections can occasionally present after many years.
