Main Nuclear Responses of the DEMO Tokamak with Different In-Vessel Component Configurations

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Research and development of the DEMOnstration power plant (DEMO) breeder blanket (BB) has been performed in recent years based on a predefined DEMO tritium breeding ratio (TBR) requirement, which determines a loss of wall surface due to non-breeding in ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Experimental insights on iron-based alloys corrosion in water cooled loops

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy
This paper presents experimental findings on the behavior of iron-based alloys in environmental conditions typical of nuclear fusion technology, specifically focusing on material degradation, which is a critical aspect for the water cooling system of EU ...

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.

Conceptual design of solid-type Pb x Li y eutectic alloy breeding blanket for CFETR

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2023
As a key component of the Chinese Fusion Engineering and Test Reactor (CFETR), the blanket is responsible for tritium breeding, neutron shielding and energy conversion.

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Avian Cholera emergence in Arctic-nesting northern Common Eiders: using community-based, participatory surveillance to delineate disease outbreak patterns and predict transmission risk

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2016
Emerging infectious diseases are a growing concern in wildlife conservation. Documenting outbreak patterns and determining the ecological drivers of transmission risk are fundamental to predicting disease spread and assessing potential impacts on ...

Conserved binding mode but diverse interfaces of MreC‐PBP2 interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of abMreC reveals a conserved two β‐barrel architecture and provides structural insights into its role within the bacterial elongasome. The abMreC–abPBP2 complex model identifies the molecular basis of MreC‐mediated PBP2 recognition, contributing to the regulation of peptidoglycan synthesis.

Inverse Kinematics and Statics-Based Motion Planning of a 7-DoF Transporter for DEMO-Type Breeding Blankets

open access: yesMachines
Future fusion power plants like DEMO must be remotely maintained for safety, including breeding blankets (BBs) weighing up to 180 t. The BB vertical transporter (BBVT), a crane-like redundant robot with 7 joints, has been previously designed for handling
