Postlarvae and Young of the Menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) in Brackish and Fresh Waters of Virginia
Copeia, 1954ALTHOUGH menhaden are among the most abundant fishes of the Atlantic Coast, little seems to be known of the distribution of larvae and juveniles. Radcliffe collected larval menhaden in Woods Hole Harbor, Massachusetts, and one was taken in St. George Sound, Florida (Kuntz and Radcliffe, 1917).

Effect of Temperature and Salinity on the Survival of Young Atlantic Menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus
Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, 1968Abstract Survival of young Atlantic menhaden at different salinities and temperatures was studied in the laboratory. Fish were tested in the spring, summer, and early fall at high temperatures (25 to 36 C) and low (5 to 7‰), intermediate (15‰), and high salinities (31 to 34‰). In the late fall and early winter, tests were conducted at temperatures of 3

Metabolic scaling, buoyancy, and growth in larval Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus
Marine Biology, 1992We measured growth of larval Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus in terms of mass, volume, and weight in water as well as the mass-specific activities of the metabolic enzymes citrate synthase, lactate dehydrogenase, and malate dehydrogenase. Weight in water, the force the fish must exert to maintain vertical position, increases by a factor of 18 in

Factors contributing to variability in larval ingress of Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus
Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2013Abstract Annual recruitment levels of age-0 juvenile Atlantic menhaden to Chesapeake Bay, which historically supported >65% of coastwide recruitment, have been consistently low since the 1980s. Diminished larval supply to the Bay is one hypothesized explanation.

Etiology of ulcerative lesions of Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) from James River, Virginia
Parasitology Research, 2005We observed ulcerative lesions on live Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, during ichthyofaunal sampling in the tidal James River in October 1999 (near Jamestown, VA, USA). Other synoptically collected fishes exhibited no signs of lesions or pre-ulcerative tissues.

Degenerative retinopathy in captive Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus (L.)
Journal of Fish Diseases, 1989Abstract. Blindness developed in Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus (L.), within 4 weeks of captivity in an indoor open culture system. Ophthalmoscopic changes indicative of retinal degeneration were substantiated by the absence of retinal electrical activity as measured by conventional electroretinography.

1. 1. Juvenile Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, were acclimated to high (35‰) and low (3.5‰) salinity water and then exposed to an abrupt salinity change to either 3.5 or 35‰. 2. 2. Changes in osmotic pressure and concentrations of sodium, potassium, chloride, and free amino acids in blood serum and axial muscle were measured for up to a ...

Occurrence of Juvenile Atlantic Menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, in the Annapolis River, Nova Scotia
Estuaries, 1993This is the first report of juvenile (age 0+) Atlantic menhadens, Brevoortia tyrannus, in the Annapolis River, Nova Scotia. Juvenile Atlantic menhaden were incidentally collected during a 3-yr study of the effects of the STRAFLO hydro-power turbine at Annapolis Royal on alosine fishes.

Oomycete fungi associated with ulcerative mycosis in menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus (Latrobe)
Journal of Fish Diseases, 1986Abstract. Deep necrotic ulcers in Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus (Latrobe), were consistently associated with the presence of oomycete fungi. These organisms were found in over 95% of all lesions both early and late. More than one species of fungus appears to be involved, indicating that these organisms are secondary to some other stressor ...
