Large‐scale tests of 50‐year‐old prestressed concrete bridge girders
Abstract An experimental investigation has been carried out as part of the BRIDGE|50 research project, focusing on large‐scale loading tests performed on five 50‐year‐old prestressed concrete (PC) girders. The study aimed at evaluating the structural response of five girders retrieved from a viaduct in the urban area of Turin, Italy, subjected to 4 ...

Ultimate Design Capacity of Bridge Abutments
Under the large forces transmitted by a bridge structure during an earthquake, a bridge abutment may undergo significant displacements deriving from the mobilisation of both the soil and the structural strength. In some cases a controlled yielding of the abutment may produce favourable effects, dissipating seismic energy and limiting the seismic ...

Numerical modelling of lateral stress on integral abutments due to cyclic loading
The integral bridge concept eliminates problems associated with expansion joints and bearings used on conventional bridges. However, integral structures are not free from problems, and of particular concern is the magnitude of lateral soil stress which ...

Seismic evaluation of the southbound Stellenberg Interchange Bridge, B5593, in South Africa
Abstract This study presents a nonlinear finite element assessment of the seismic vulnerability of Bridge B5593, located in the south‐western region of South Africa. Previous evaluations identified a high likelihood of column failure; however, these were based on linear material models incapable of capturing damage evolution.

Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.

Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil for Low-Volume Bridge Abutments:TR-621, January 2012
This report presents a review of literature on geosynthetic reinforced soil (GRS) bridge abutments, and test results and analysis from two field demonstration projects (Bridge 1 and Bridge 2) conducted in Buchanan County, Iowa, to evaluate the ...

Ungulate substrate use in fauna passages
Fauna passages are increasingly constructed at major roads and railways to mitigate the negative effects of infrastructure and traffic on wildlife. The function of such passages depends on design, including the construction materials, soil, and vegetation.
