Integral Bridge Abutment-to-Approach Slab Connection Final Report;TR-539/TR-530, June 2008

open access: yes, 2008
The Iowa Department of Transportation has long recognized that approach slab pavements of integral abutment bridges are prone to settlement and cracking, which manifests as the “bump at the end of the bridge”.

Molecular Dynamics Studies of Shape Memory Polymers: From Bead–Spring Models to Atomistic Simulations

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Coarse‐grained (left) and atomistic (right) models of the shape memory polymer ESTANE ETE 75DT3 are shown schematically. The two representations bridge molecular detail and mesoscopic description. Both models capture shape memory behavior, linking segmental mobility and conformational relaxation of anisotropic chains to macroscopic recovery, and ...

Novel macroscopic mechanical model for rapid and refined analysis of link slab bridges

open access: yesAdvances in Bridge Engineering
Debonded link slabs are commonly adopted to replace the expansion joints of existing simply supported bridges, thereby protecting the girders and piers underneath them from exposure to water and deleterious agents. The primary challenges for the accurate

Investigation of the Causes of Transverse Bridge Deck Cracking [PDF]

open access: yes
Transverse cracks in concrete bridge decks sometimes initiate in the early stages of the bridge service life, usually just after construction. Cracks in the bridge deck can accelerate the deterioration of the deck concrete, provide a direct pathway for ...

Microstructure Reconstruction in Battery Electrodes Using Machine Learning Based on Low‐Voltage Focused Ion Beam–Scanning Electron Microscopy Tomography Images

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Low‐voltage FIB‐SEM tomography combined with a image preprocessing pipeline improves phase contrast and enables reliable machine‐learning segmentation of conductive networks in lithium‐ion battery electrodes. Structural descriptors are extracted from segmented images, done semimanually and automated, and compared.

Evaluation of the Use of IRI Data to Estimate Bridge Dynamic Impact Factor (DIF) [PDF]

open access: yes
The objectives of this project were to correlate international roughness index (IRI) data (which are widely collected and directly related to bridge deck roughness) to impact factors and develop a process for determining the impact factor to use for all ...

A Dislocation Perspective on Strength and Toughness in Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Dislocations in ceramics enjoy a long but yet under‐appreciated history. The three research waves for dislocations in ceramics highlight the topic evolution over the last 90 years. This review focuses on the impact of dislocation on strength and toughness in ceramics.
