Bulbous Pier: Alternative to Bridge Pier Extensions
2015Bridge deck splashing causes deterioration to the bridge structure and renders the bridge unsafe for motorist and pedestrians. The traditional countermeasure for bridge deck splashing is pier extension, the pier extension moves the pier wave away from the bridge deck, but retrofitting existing bridges with pier extensions is costly.

Most empirical, local scour prediction equations over predict scour depths at structures that are wide compared to the water depths where they are located. This paper discusses various researchers attempts to deal with this problem. The methods and equations used by several Western European Countries (obtained during the FHWA, 1998 European Scanning ...

Foundation Depth for Bridge Piers
Journal of The Institution of Engineers (India): Series A, 2013The safety of bridge piers built in rivers having the bed is one of the prime aspects in the study of scouring process around bridge piers. The stability of bridge piers depends on the depth of foundation provided below maximum scour level. The stability analysis of bridge piers is carried based on moment of forces acting on the caisson pier when the ...

ISH Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2011
ABSTRACT Proper estimation of grip length (foundation depth of pier below maximum scour level) is very important for safety of bridge piers, Lacey's recommendations are used for the design of grip length for bridges in India. Validity of Lacey's recommendation has been investigated by both experimental and analytical approaches.

Riprap Protection at Bridge Piers
Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 2001Although riprap is the most commonly employed countermeasure against scouring around bridge piers, few studies exist of riprap performance under live-bed conditions.

Reconstruction of Windsor Bridge Piers
Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board, 1996The Windsor Bridge provides a two-lane highway crossing of the Susquehanna River in Broome County, New York. The structure comprises three 62.5-m (205-ft) simple-span through trusses supported by reinforced concrete abutments and solid-shaft piers. Having been built in 1935, it required rehabilitation in the early 1980s.

Hollow Concrete Bridge Pier Behavior
ACI Journal Proceedings, 1985This paper reports results of tests of four model bridge piers. The principle objectives of this experimental program were to verify the axial load-moment curvature P-M-phi relationship for hollow columns and to examine the validity of the plane-section assumption for hollow-pier sections. This was necessary to validate completely the computer analysis
