The Evolution of Brightest Cluster Galaxies
Astrophysics and Space Science, 2003In this contribution we review the properties of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) and discuss the impact that X-ray cluster selection is having on their use as cosmological probes. BCGs form a unique galaxy population. They are located near the gravitational centre of galaxy clusters and are the most massive galaxies in the universe, being some 10 ...

Brightest Members of Clusters of Galaxies [PDF]
THE work of Humason, Mayall and Sandage1 and the more recent work of Sandage2–5 and Peterson6 show that the dispersion in the absolute magnitude of the first brightest galaxies in rich clusters of galaxies is only 0.3 magnitude. Peebles7 suggested that this small dispersion is simply the consequence of the cluster luminosity function and compared the ...

Structural Properties of Brightest Cluster Galaxies [PDF]
We present the first modem systematic study of local brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) profiles that extends to radii beyond 200h -1 kpc. Measuring the surface brightness profiles of BCGs out to large radii is critical for understanding the processes driving their formation.

Brightest Members of Clusters of Galaxies
Nature, 1969THERE are two opposing interpretations of the small dispersion σ1∼0.35 mag in the absolute magnitudes M1 of the brightest members of rich clusters of galaxies measured by Sandage1. In one view, advanced, among others, by Peebles2,3, it is assumed that there is a universal cluster luminosity function, and that the value of σ1 and of the variation of M1 ...

Brightest Cluster Galaxies and Dry Mergers
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2008Photometric properties of the early type Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) has been investigated for a sample of 85 BCGs with redshifts less than 0.1 selected from the C4 cluster catalogue. The results are compared to those obtained from a sample of elliptical galaxies chosen with similar apparent magnitude and redshift ranges.
