Ultrasonic Attenuation and Speed of Sound of Cornstarch Suspensions [PDF]

open access: yesJ. Acoust. Soc. Am. 133(3) 1399--1403 (2013), 2013
The goal of this study is to contribute to the physics underlying the material properties of suspensions that exhibit shear thickening through the ultrasonic characterization of suspensions of cornstarch in a density-matched solution. Ultrasonic measurements at frequencies in the range of 4 to 8 MHz of the speed of sound and the frequency-dependent ...

Active Thermal Field Integration for Marangoni‐Driven Salt Rejection and Water Collection

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A thermal gradient fabric (TGF) evaporator with an auxiliary active thermal field can simultaneously increase evaporation rates and achieve long‐term salt rejection. The auxiliary active thermal field is well integrated with solar energy to construct moderate, extensive, and circulating Marangoni flow for salt rejection.

Hydrophobicity and Pore Structure: Unraveling the Critical Factors of Alcohol and Acid Adsorption in Zeolites

open access: yesMolecules
Adsorbing and recycling alcohols and acids from industrial wastewater is of great significance in wastewater treatment; establishing the possible quantitative relationship of alcohol–acid adsorption capacity with the struct0ures of adsorbents and ...

Formation of brine channels in sea-ice [PDF]

open access: yesEur. Phys. J. E (2017) 40: 25, 2014
Liquid salty micro-channels (brine) between growing ice platelets in sea ice are an important habitat for $CO_2$ - binding microalgaea with great impact on polar ecosystems. The structure formation of ice platelets is microscopically described and a phase field model is developed.

Distinctive Doping Behavior of Conjugated Polymers With Pendant‐Side Conjugation for Enhanced Thermoelectric Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Novel conjugated polymers with side‐chain π‐conjugation are developed to enhance organic thermoelectric properties. Remarkably, the pendant doping in the conjugated polymers preserved strong intermolecular ordering in the film states even at high FeCl3 dopant concentrations (16 – 32 mM), achieving a promising power factor > 10 µW m−1 K−2 across a wide ...

Designing of Self‐Dispersing Soft Dendritic Microcleaners for Microplastics Capture and Recovery

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The capture and recovery of microplastics from open aquatic systems is a complex problem, which necessitates nontrivial solutions. The principles of a comprehensive multistage process based on sustainably sourced microcleaners with hierarchical morphology are demonstrated.

An integrated experimental and computational framework for modeling creep behavior in shale rocks induced by chemo-mechanical loading [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Creep deformation in shale rocks is an important factor in many applications, such as the sustainability of geostructures, wellbore stability, evaluation of land subsidence, CO2 storage, toxic waste containment, and hydraulic fracturing. One mechanism leading to this time-dependent deformation under a constant load is the dissolution/formation ...

Brinicles as a case of inverse chemical gardens [PDF]

open access: yesLangmuir 29, 7655-7660, 2013, 2013
Brinicles are hollow tubes of ice from centimetres to metres in length that form under floating sea ice in the polar oceans when dense, cold brine drains downwards from sea ice into sea water close to its freezing point. When this extremely cold brine leaves the ice it freezes the water it comes into contact with; a hollow tube of ice --- a brinicle ---

Electrical Impedance Tomography Monitoring of Salt Transportation in Cellulose Hydrogel for Solar‐Driven Evaporative Desalination via Laser Defined Wettability

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Solar‐driven evaporation is a promising solution to the global water crisis; however, it faces a significant challenge of salt accumulation during the evaporation process. This study introduces an innovative in situ electrical impedance tomography technique for real‐time monitoring of salt transportation in the evaporator.

Effect of ion hydration on the first-order transition in the sequential wetting of hexane on brine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
In recent experiments, a sequence of changes in the wetting state (`wetting transitions') has been observed upon increasing the temperature in systems consisting of pentane on pure water and of hexane on brine. This sequence of two transitions is brought about by an interplay of short-range and long-range interactions between substrate and adsorbate ...
