一定寸法, 形状および品質のコークスを連続行程で, 生産するための予備実験を行なった。反応管の寸法は長さ90-160cm, 内径6.6-12.6cmでそれらは内壁に幾本かのフィンをもった鋳鉄管で出来ている。試料は非粘結炭, ピッチコークス, 無煙炭およびコールタールビッチを約150℃, 150kg/cm2で成型して作うた。これらの成型炭は反応器の内壁に沿って降下しながらコークス化された。この研究結果から成型炭の反応完結時間と温度分布の関係が理論的に予測され, また理論値と実験値がよく一致していることが判る。
