A variable P舁v broad absorption line and quasar outflow energetics [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2014
Broad absorption lines (BALs) in quasar spectra identify high velocity outflows that might exist in all quasars and could play a major role in feedback to galaxy evolution. The viability of BAL outflows as a feedback mechanism depends on their kinetic energies, as derived from the outflow velocities, column densities, and distances from the central ...

Broad Absorption Line Quasars: An Overview

1995
We review recent dynamical models proposed to explain the high velocity outflows seen in Broad Absorption Line Quasars (BAL QSOs). The arguments leading to the “confinement problem” are reviewed and the way with which these recent models attempt to deal with this problem discussed.

The covering factor of quasar broad absorption line clouds

open access: yesAstrophysical Journal, 1988
Two different interpretations of the phenomenon of broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs are presented and a resolution is suggested. One interpretation is that the BAL clouds cover most of the sky as viewed from the quasar; this implies that BALQSOs are an usual subset of the general class of QSOs.

Are radio‐loud Broad Absorption Line Quasars young sources?

Astronomische Nachrichten, 2009
AbstractStudying Broad Absorption Line Quasars (BAL QSOs) is interesting because they probe the physics of the AGN environment, and because AGN outflows are important ingredients in many recent astrophysical puzzles. In the last decade, a substantial population of radio BAL QSOs was discovered and we have started a characterisation of the radio‐loud ...

Radio Loud Broad Absorption Line Quasars

2009
This thesis is concerned with Broad Absorption Line Quasars (BAL QSOs). At the moment it is not clear how many quasars host outflows and why these can only be seen in a fraction of the quasar population. The most popular hypotheses proposed to explain this mainly differ in the role given to orientation.
