How Saturated are Absorption Lines in the Broad Absorption Line Quasar PG 1411+442 ? [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Recently, convincing evidence was found for extremely large X-ray absorption by column densities $> 10^{23} cm^{-2}$ in broad absorption line quasars. One consequence of this is that any soft X-ray emission from these QSOs would be the scattered light or

EVN observation of three Broad Absorption Line quasars [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2003
We present the results of European VLBI Network observations of 3 Broad Absorption Line quasars at 1.6 GHz. They are all compact with linear sizes less than 1 kpc. The flat spectral source, J1556 + 3517, is unresolved at about 20 mas resolution, indicating that the orientation of the radio jet in this source is probably near the line of sight.

Extragalactic jets of broad absorption line (BAL) quasars [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2014
AbstractFast outflows of the ionized plasma, probably lunched in proximity of Supermassive Black Hole, are responsible for blue-shifted Broad Absorption Lines (BALs) in quasar spectrum. Outflows together with powerful jets produced in AGN are important feedback processes. Therefore, understanding physics behind BAL outflows might be a key to comprehend

The Fraction and Kinematics of Broad Absorption Line Quasars across Cosmic Time

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Luminous quasars are powerful targets to investigate the role of feedback from supermassive black holes (BHs) in regulating the growth phases of BHs themselves and of their host galaxies, up to the highest redshifts.

Constraints on the relative sizes of intervening Mg II-absorbing clouds and quasar emitting regions

open access: yes, 2012
Context: A significantly higher incidence of strong (rest equivalent width W_r > 1 {\AA}) intervening Mg II absorption is observed along gamma-ray burst (GRB) sight-lines relative to those of quasar sight-lines.

Impact of Radio-mode Feedback on the Covering Fraction of the Circumgalactic Medium of Quasars

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Utilizing data from the Low-Frequency Array Two-meter Sky Survey and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we assemble a sample of 1469 projected quasar pairs with detected radio emissions from foreground quasars, as well as a control sample of 5846 pairs ...

Drastic changes in the molecular absorption at redshift z=0.89 toward the quasar PKS 1830-211

open access: yes, 2008
A 12 year-long monitoring of the absorption caused by a z=0.89 spiral galaxy on the line of sight to the radio-loud gravitationally lensed quasar PKS 1830-211 reveals spectacular changes in the HCO+ and HCN (2-1) line profiles.

HST Observations of the Broad Absorption Line Quasar PG 0946+301 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
We analyze HST and ground based spectra of the brightest BALQSO in the UV: PG~0946+301. A detailed study of the absorption troughs as a function of velocity is presented, facilitated by the use of a new algorithm to solve for the optical depth as a ...

Acceleration of C iv and Si iv Broad Absorption Lines in Quasar SDSS J140058.79+260619.4

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
We report the discovery of a velocity shift signature in the C iv and Si iv broad absorption lines (BALs) of the quasar SDSS J140058.79+260619.4 ( z _em  = 2.351). From its two-epoch spectra, we find two BAL systems (systems A and B) in C iv and/or Si iv
