Abstract Pierre Paul Broca (1824-1880) was born on 28 June 1824 in Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, a small town in the Dordogne, east of Bordeaux, in a Calvinist family.1 His father, who had served as a surgeon in Napoleon’s army, was a general practitioner. Paul attended the local primary and high schools.
