From Clinic to Computation: Multiscale Bioengineering Strategies for Durable Biological Aortic Valve Replacements

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bioprosthetic aortic valves have revolutionized the treatment of aortic stenosis, but their durability is limited by structural valve deterioration (SVD). This review focuses on the pericardial tissue at the heart of these valves, examining how its mechanical properties and calcification drive fatigue and failure.

ppm Pd-catalyzed, Cu-free Sonogashira couplings in water using commercially available catalyst precursors. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
A new catalyst that derives from commercially available precursors for copper-free, Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira reactions at the sustainable ppm level of precious metal palladium under mild aqueous micellar conditions has been developed.

Mechanochromism of Glassy Polymers Enabled by a Loop‐Forming Supramolecular Mechanophore

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The supramolecular mechanophore LOOP is covalently introduced into glassy polymers, capable of reporting force‐induced pre‐failure damage and local fracture events in polymer glasses. Under different mechanical deformation modes, including grinding, tensile stretching, and scratching, LOOP probes irreversible events in polymer glasses through a ...

Friction, wear, and thermal stability studies of some organotin and organosilicon compounds [PDF]

open access: yes
Thermal decomposition temperatures were determined for a number of organotin and organosilicon compounds. A ball-on-disk sliding friction apparatus was used to determine the friction and wear characteristics of two representative compounds, (1) 3-tri-n ...

Nickel-catalyzed reductive thiolation and selenylation of unactivated alkyl bromides

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Chalcogen-containing compounds find broad application in chemical industry. Here, the authors report a nickel-catalyzed reductive chalcogenation of unactivated alkyl bromides with thiosulfonates and selenosulfonates to access a range of unsymmetrical ...

Improved Synthesis of 1-O-Acyl-β-d-Glucopyranose Tetraacetates

open access: yesMolecules, 2017
An improved synthesis of 1-O-acyl glucosyl esters that avoids the use of expensive Ag reagents as well as the hydrolysis of unstable glucosyl bromides is reported. Notably, β-configuration products were obtained exclusively in good yields.

Receptor‐Free Identification of Toxic Gases Enabled by Hygroscopic Aqueous Salt Films

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Water as a gas sensor coating sounds impossible—until it stops evaporating. Here, hygroscopic salt solutions (LiCl, LiBr, H3PO4) form non‐drying aqueous films on CNT chemiresistors under ambient air. Gases partition into these liquid layers, sometimes transforming into water, and generate salt‐specific resistance fingerprints across a four‐channel ...

4-Cyanopyridinium bromide [PDF]

open access: yesActa Crystallographica Section E Structure Reports Online, 2012
In the title compound, C6H5N2 +·Br−, the pyridine N atom is protonated and involved in an intermolecular N—H...Br hydrogen bond which, together with weak C—H...N hydrogen bonds, results in the formation of a chain along the c axis. Weak intermolecular C—H...Br interactions between pyridine H atoms and Br− anions connect these chains ...

DNA‐Origami‐Assembled Rhodium Nanoantennas for Deep‐UV Label‐Free Single‐Protein Detection

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Deep‐UV autofluorescence of single proteins in DNA origami‐based rhodium nanoantennas. Precisely positioned within the plasmonic nanogap, proteins retain their native state while their intrinsic emission is strongly amplified, enabling label‐free single‐molecule detection and opening new opportunities for highly sensitive and specific biosensing ...

Spontaneous Octahedral Tilting in the Cubic Inorganic Caesium Halide Perovskites CsSnX$_3$ and CsPbX$_3$ (X = F, Cl, Br, I)

open access: yes, 2017
The local crystal structures of many perovskite-structured materials deviate from the average space group symmetry. We demonstrate, from lattice-dynamics calculations based on quantum chemical force constants, that all the caesium-lead and caesium-tin ...
