1993A number of methods are available for the assessment of airways inflammation in asthma: (1) Large samples of airways can be studied in material sampled at autopsy or at surgery. (2) Bronchoscopy provides a means to both inspect and sample the lower respiratory tract.

Bronchoalveolar lavage in the diagnosis of cancer
Lung, 1990Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a widely used clinical procedure. To determine if BAL could provide useful information in the detection of cancer, 850 lavages from 421 patients having BAL for a variety of indications, 50 lavages in patients with Hodgkin's disease and 20 patients with breast cancer undergoing bone marrow transplant were reviewed.

2020Cell counts and the cytologic assessment of specific cell types are helpful in determining whether fluid obtained from a bronchoalveolar lavage procedure is an adequate representation of the alveolar spaces and whether it has a markedly abnormal distribution of inflammatory cells.
