Microplastics from Wearable Bioelectronic Devices: Sources, Risks, and Sustainable Solutions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bioelectronic devices (e.g., e‐skins) heavily rely on polymers that at the end of their life cycle will generate microplastics. For research, a holistic approach to viewing the full impact of such devices cannot be overlooked. The potential for devices as sources for microplastics is raised, with mitigation strategies surrounding polysaccharide and ...

Of highland-lowland borderlands: local societies and foreign power in the Zagros-Mesopotamian interface [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Narratives of civilization are spun from the juxtaposition of a civilized self with that of a barbarous other. Such an opposition is never more easily constructed than from the distinctiveness of lowland and mountain topographies, environments, and life ...

Approaching sheep herds origins and the emergence of the wool economy in continental Europe during the Bronze Age

open access: yesArchaeological and Anthropological Sciences, 2019
In recent years, extensive archaeological studies have provided us with new knowledge on wool and woollen textile production in continental Europe during the Bronze Age.

Photo‐Switching Thermal and Lithium‐Ion Conductivity in Azobenzene Polymers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Light‐responsive azobenzene polymers control thermal and ionic transport simultaneously through structural transitions. UV illumination disrupts π–π stacking, converting crystalline trans states to amorphous cis configurations. Thermal conductivity drops from 0.45 to 0.15 W·m−1·K−1 while Li+ diffusivity increases 100 fold. This dual transport switching

Generalized Spectral Signatures of Electron Fractionalization in Quasi-One and -Two Dimensional Molybdenum Bronzes and Superconducting Cuprates

open access: yes, 2003
We establish the quasi-one-dimensional Li purple bronze as a photoemission paradigm of Luttinger liquid behavior. We also show that generalized signatures of electron fractionalization are present in the angle resolved photoemission spectra for quasi-two-

Boom and bust in Bronze Age Britain: major copper production from the Great Orme mine and European trade, c. 1600–1400 BC

open access: yesAntiquity, 2019
The Great Orme Bronze Age copper mine in Wales is one of Europe's largest, although its size has been attributed to a small-scale, seasonal labour force working for nearly a millennium.

Anomalous Stiffening of a Conjugated Polymer During Electrochemical Oxidation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The electromechanical response of a thienothiophene‐based conjugated polymer with triethylene glycol side chains is investigated. Electrochemical nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy reveal a modest and reversible increase in elastic modulus at room temperature upon electrochemical oxidation.

Electric-field-induced phase transition and pinched P–E hysteresis loops in Pb-free ferroelectrics with a tungsten bronze structure

open access: yesNPG Asia Materials, 2018
Antiferroelectrics are of interest due to their high potential for energy storage. Here, we report the discovery of pinched, polarization-vs.-electric field (P–E) hysteresis loops in the lead-free tungsten bronze ferroelectrics Ba4Sm2Ti4Nb6O30 and ...
