ABSTRACT In New Zealand, public housing can offer households a permanent home and a rental‐based approximation of owner‐occupation. Using a social determinants framework, this paper examines youth justice outcomes among individuals aged 14–24 years who were continuously housed in public housing between 2013 and 2022, including those who resided in ...

Cognitive Symbionts. Expanding the Scope of Cognitive Science With Fungi

open access: yesTopics in Cognitive Science, EarlyView.
Abstract It has been argued that fungi have cognitive capacities, and even conscious experiences. While these arguments risk ushering in unproductive disputes about how words like “mind,” “cognitive,” “sentient,” and “conscious” should be used, paying close attention to key properties of fungal life can also be uncontroversially productive for ...

Seeing Through an Ant's Eyes: Do Entomopathogenic Fungi Extend Their Cognition to Their Hosts?

open access: yesTopics in Cognitive Science, EarlyView.
Abstract Post‐cognitivist approaches recognize cognition as a phenomenon that involves not just brains but all the sensorimotor apparatus of organisms. This means that brains are not always required for the emergence of cognition and that every organism can, in principle, be cognitive, unlocking a theoretical framework to explain the complex adaptive ...

Nanoplastic Exposure Impairs Host Fitness and Parasite Transmission With Transgenerational Maternal Reproductive Costs in the Daphnia‐Fungal Parasite System

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 11, November 2026.
Polystyrene nanoplastics (50 nm) severely reduced the fitness of Daphnia magna infected with the fungal parasite Australozyma monospora, halving parental survival and suppressing reproduction, and they lowered parasite maturation indirectly by killing hosts before transmission rather than by limiting within‐host infection.
