Multiple parasitism in an evictor brood parasite: Patterns revealed by long-term monitoring, continuous video-recording and genetic analyses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
In some populations of host of brood parasites, more than two parasite eggs may be laid in a single nest. This phenomenon is known as multiple parasitism, representing a cost to both host and parasite. In this study, we analysed a long-term dataset (2007–

Rotary 3D Printing With Integrated Electroplating

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A rotary material extrusion platform integrates localized copper electroplating with printing and encapsulation to fabricate cylindrical polymer–metal structures containing fully embedded, low‐resistance conductive pathways that enable internal Joule heating and thermally activated shape‐memory responses.

Parental genetic diversity of brown trout (Salmo trutta m. fario) brood stock affects offspring susceptibility to whirling disease

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2015
Background Whirling disease, caused by the myxozoan parasite Myxobolus cerebralis, has high economical and ecological importance worldwide. Susceptibility to the disease varies considerably among salmonid species.

Electrospun Wood‐Derived Biopolymers as Electrodes in Electrochemical Energy Storage Technologies

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electrospinning transforms wood‐derived cellulose and lignin into architecturally defined, binder‐free carbon electrodes with tuneable porosity and functionality. This review shows how fibre design enables decoupled charge and mass transport, enhancing performance across battery systems, while identifying key challenges in spinnability, scalability ...

A Preliminary Study on “Personalised Treatment” against Varroa destructor Infestations in Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) Colonies

open access: yesAnimals, 2023
The requirement for the protection of bee colonies against Varroa destructor invasions has been noted by many breeders and is included as an aspect of the development of beekeeping.

Memristive‐Gated RC‐Delay Synaptic Transistors for Time‐Encoded Analog in‐Memory Computing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A Memristive‐Gated Transistor for Time‐Encoded Analog In‐Memory Computing — By exploiting the RC delay of a self‐rectifying interface‐type memristor, nonlinear I–V distortion is structurally bypassed, enabling 3‐bit nonvolatile memory, spike‐timing‐based analog encoding, and hardware‐calibrated reservoir‐computing validation within a unified device ...

Are urbanization and brood parasitism associated with differences in telomere lengths in song sparrows?

open access: yesJournal of Avian Biology
Urbanization reflects a major form of environmental change impacting wild birds globally. Whereas urban habitats may provide increased availability of water, some food items, and reduced predation levels compared to rural, they can also present novel ...

Model eggs fail to detect egg recognition in host populations after brood parasitism is relaxed

open access: yesFrontiers in Zoology, 2020
Background Obligate brood parasites exert strong selective pressure on target hosts. In response, hosts typically evolve anti-parasitism strategies, of which egg recognition is one of the most efficient.

Chitin‐Derived Carbon‐Metal Functional Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Functional carbon materials are synthesized from combination of biopolymer (chitin) and iron precursors. The resultant material exhibits superior surface area and adsorptive properties compared to carbon materials synthesized directly from pure chitin.

Responses of Female Yellow Warblers to Playbacks Signaling Brood Parasitism or Predation Risk: A Quasi-Replication Study

open access: yesAnimal Behavior and Cognition, 2021
Many avian species are negatively impacted by obligate avian brood parasites, which lay their eggs in the nests of host species. The yellow warbler (Setophaga petechia), which is host to the brood-parasitic brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater ...
