Paternal phylogeographic structure of the brown bear (Ursus arctos) in northeastern Asia and the effect of male-mediated gene flow to insular populations

open access: yesZoological Letters, 2017
Background Sex-biased dispersal is widespread among mammals, including the brown bear (Ursus arctos). Previous phylogeographic studies of the brown bear based on maternally inherited mitochondrial DNA have shown intraspecific genetic structuring around ...

Brown Bear Denning Habits in Northeastern Türkiye

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation
Denning behavior is essential for species that must survive difficult seasonal conditions when food is scarce. In the first denning study conducted in Türkiye, we investigated the denning habits of brown bears in the evergreen Sarıkamış forest in the east of the country.

Water Permeates and Plasticizes Amorphous Carbon Dots: Unraveling the Inner Accessibility of the Nanoparticles by Glass Transition Studies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The water permeability of amorphous carbon dots (CDs) is demonstrated by investigating their plasticization. Novel polyamide‐based and amorphous nanoparticles are synthesized by controlling their inner packing density. Water plasticization is evidenced by the decrease of the CDs glass transition temperature with increasing the hydration degree.

Nonmulberry Silk Fibroin Doping Boosts Charge Transfer and Charge Injection in Aligned Polypyrrole‐Silk Scaffolds for Low‐Voltage Neurostimulation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Conductive silk‐polypyrrole scaffolds couple redox stability with cell‐affinitive peptides present innately in an endogenous silk fibroin, enabling optimized electrical stimulation to drive neurite outgrowth. Findings establish electrochemical‐biological link for biomaterial design rules for smart nerve guidance conduits that can provide low voltage ...

Reindeer habitat selection under the risk of brown bear predation during calving season

open access: yesEcosphere, 2016
The depredation of semi‐domesticated reindeer by large carnivores reflects an important human–wildlife conflict in Fennoscandia. Recent studies have revealed that brown bears (Ursus arctos) may kill substantial numbers of reindeer calves (Rangifer ...
